MiX Telematics brings free global traffic app to South Africa
8 March 2012: JSE-listed MiX Telematics, a global leader in vehicle tracking and fleet management solutions, is bringing the world’s first community-based traffic and navigation app for smartphones to South Africa.
Waze, an innovative free app that relies on user generated content, allows drivers to outsmart and beat traffic together by sharing information about a user’s speed and location and identifying where traffic is moving slowly.
Charles Tasker, Managing Director of MiX Telematics (International) says, “The partnership between Waze and MiX Telematics is a natural fit as MiX Telematics strives to create a safer, better driving experience for its customers, while Waze is an innovative application that enables drivers to have a smoother, less stressful and more enjoyable journey.” The aim of the partnership is to grow the local user base of Waze to its maximum potential.
“Waze currently has 12 million registered users across 45 countries. The global success of the app has seen adoption figures double in the past six months, and to date Waze has over 30 000 users in South Africa,” says Uri Levine, co-founder and President of Waze.
The involvement of MiX Telematics in bringing Waze to South Africa is highly valuable as local users get a head-start in the form of a base road grid across South Africa. This is made possible by the injection of MiX Telematics’ existing positional data into the Waze app, thus ensuring all the major roads in SA are covered.
“At the moment, we have no reason to believe that the number of cars on the road is going to decrease in the near future, or that road improvement or public transport projects will significantly enhance our daily commute in South Africa. Waze offers South African commuters a way to avoid some of the stresses of daily traffic and the only cost to users is the data that the app uses,” concludes Tasker.
Waze is freely available on the Apple AppStore, the Android Market Place, the Nokia Ovi Store, BlackBerry's App World and Windows Market. Waze South Africa can be found on Twitter (@WazeSA) and Facebook (www.facebook.com/WazeSA). The only cost to users is the data that the app consumes and as such, users are encouraged to use the app in conjunction with a mobile data package.
